Tutorial V: Release and engineering change

Source

Engineering change management as the PLM books describe it (Stark, Grieves, Saaksvuori and Immonen): a release with part number and revision, an engineering change, a new revision, the old one obsolete; the package NX publishes with File › Export › Publish Technical Data Package

You learn

PLM › Versions and History, Create Version, Release, Publish Release Package, Compare, Releases, Mark obsolete

Needs

Tutorial T first (the replay runs it), and git on the PATH for Strata

Step by step

1. Version control

Save the bush into a project folder. PLM › Versions and History, Turn on version control: from now on every save is recorded.

2. Release revision A

PLM › Create Version: V1. Right-click V1 in the history, Release: part number BUSH-100; Strata proposes revision A.

3. The release package of revision A

PLM › Publish Release Package: the dialog picks BUSH-100 rev A. The package holds the STEP model, the FreeCAD document, the drawing as PDF, the PMI and inspection plan, the fit’s stack-up and the mass properties, with a manifest of SHA-256 checksums (Release packages).

4. ECO-001

The shaft runs warmer than planned: the bore changes from H7 to F7. Change the bore PMI’s Fit to F7 and save. The PMI shows Ø16.000 F7 (+0.034/+0.016) Ⓔ, and the fit’s stack-up from tutorial T follows: clearance 0.022 to 0.051.

5. Compare and release revision B

Create Version V2, then PLM › Compare V1 with V2: Strata lists the changed PMI property. Release V2: the same part number, revision B. PLM › Releases, select revision A, Mark obsolete.

Compare: what changed between V1 and V2

6. Both packages

Publish revision B, and revision A again. Revision A’s package, made after the change, still documents Ø16 H7 (16.000 to 16.018): a package is made from what was released, never from the working copy. Revision B’s documents F7 (16.016 to 16.034).

Tutorial BC hands revision B to manufacturing, in Carbon.

Result Means

same

The book’s NX steps work as written.

differs

It works, but the FreeCAD way is different; the notes say how.

limit

The book’s way fails in FreeCAD itself; a workaround follows in the next steps.

missing

FreeCAD has no such function; a stand-in follows.

skipped

Not replayed; the notes give the reason.

FAILED

Did not work.

What differs from NX

  • Teamcenter’s role is played by Strata: versions are Git commits in a hidden .strata folder, releases are tags.

  • Releasing is the version’s context-menu command; the replay calls it directly instead of opening the menu.

  • NX’s Publish Technical Data Package makes 3D PDF or JT; NX-Style’s release package is a folder and a zip with a checksummed manifest.
